Frontaalid, also known as frontalids, are a group of extinct marine reptiles that belonged to the order Thalattosauria. They lived during the Late Triassic period, approximately 228 to 201 million years ago, and were among the earliest known thalattosaurs. These reptiles were adapted for an aquatic lifestyle, with streamlined bodies and flippers for efficient swimming.

Frontaalid fossils have been primarily discovered in Europe, particularly in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. The most well-known genus within this group is *Frontalessaurus*, though some classifications may differ due to taxonomic revisions. These animals were likely semi-aquatic, spending part of their time in water and part on land, similar to modern-day sea turtles. Their skulls were elongated, and they possessed sharp teeth suited for catching fish and other small marine prey.

Frontaalids were relatively small compared to later thalattosaurs, with estimated lengths ranging from about 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6.5 feet). Their fossil record provides valuable insights into the early evolution of marine reptile adaptations, particularly in the transition from terrestrial ancestors to fully aquatic lifestyles. While not as extensively studied as some other Triassic reptiles, such as ichthyosaurs or plesiosaurs, they remain an important part of paleontological research on Triassic marine ecosystems.

The study of frontaalids contributes to understanding the biodiversity and ecological dynamics of the Late Triassic oceans, a time marked by significant environmental changes, including the end-Triassic mass extinction event.
