A fremtidsfuldmagt, translated as a future power of attorney or lasting power of attorney, is a legal document in Norway that allows an individual to appoint a trusted person to manage their affairs if they are no longer capable of doing so themselves due to illness, accident, or old age. This instrument is designed to ensure that personal and financial matters are handled according to the individual's wishes.

The fremtidsfuldmagt must be made in writing and signed by the principal (the person granting the power) in the presence of two witnesses. These witnesses must be at least 18 years old, understand the nature of the document, and not be close relatives or employees of the principal or the appointed attorney. The document specifies the extent of the powers granted, which can be broad or limited to specific areas. It can cover financial matters, such as managing bank accounts and paying bills, as well as personal matters, like healthcare decisions and decisions about living arrangements.

The fremtidsfuldmagt only becomes active when the principal is deemed by a doctor to be unable to manage their own affairs. At this point, the appointed attorney must have the fremtidsfuldmagt registered with the Norwegian County Governor (Statsforvalteren). The attorney has a duty to act in the principal's best interests and can be held accountable for mismanagement. This legal tool provides a way to plan for future incapacity and ensures continuity in managing one's life according to pre-determined wishes, thereby avoiding potential guardianship proceedings.
