framåtskott

Framåtskott is the leading shoot of a plant, the portion at the tip of a stem where growth occurs. It comprises the apical meristem and the terminal bud, and it is the major site of primary elongation, determining the shoot's length and, in many species, the beginning of new leaves and flowers.

Anatomy and growth: The growth zone is the apical meristem at the shoot apex. From the terminal bud a sequence of leaves develops in orderly nodes. Growth is produced at the apex (apical growth) and proceeds by addition of cells just behind the tip, allowing rapid elongation.

Regulation: The framåtskott exerts apical dominance, primarily through hormones such as auxin, which suppresses the growth of axillary (lateral) buds along the stem. Light, temperature, and resource availability also influence framåtskott elongation and direction, with shoots tending to grow toward light (phototropism).

Practical aspects: In horticulture and forestry, framåtskott management influences plant shape and productivity. Removing or tipping the framåtskott can release lateral buds to form branches, while maintaining a strong leader may be desirable in certain training systems. The vigor and duration of the framåtskott can vary by species and season.

Relation to life cycle: Many herbaceous and woody plants produce a new framåtskott each growing season, replacing the previous year's growth. In some contexts the term is used interchangeably with apical shoot or terminal shoot.
