Frøspredning, also known as seed dispersal, is the movement or transport of seeds away from the parent plant. This process is crucial for the survival and propagation of plant species, as it helps to reduce competition between the parent plant and its offspring, colonize new habitats, and maintain genetic diversity. Plants have evolved a variety of mechanisms to achieve frøspredning, which can be broadly categorized by the dispersal agent.

Wind dispersal, or anemochory, is common in plants with small, lightweight seeds or seeds with specialized structures like wings or plumes, such as dandelions and maple trees. Water dispersal, or hydrochory, is utilized by aquatic plants or those growing near water bodies, where seeds can float and be carried by currents, like coconuts.

Animal dispersal, or zoochory, is a highly effective method. Some seeds are consumed by animals and pass through their digestive tracts, with the hard seed coat protecting them from digestion and aiding in germination after excretion. Others have sticky coatings or barbs that attach to an animal's fur or feathers, allowing them to be carried long distances. Many fruits are specifically adapted to attract animals with their bright colors and sweet tastes, encouraging consumption and subsequent dispersal.

Self-dispersal, or autochory, occurs when the plant itself actively ejects its seeds. This can involve explosive mechanisms, such as in the touch-me-not plant, or gravity-assisted dispersal in heavy-fruited plants. Effective frøspredning ensures that new generations of plants are established in suitable environments, contributing to ecosystem health and biodiversity.
