Fotostabiilsus refers to the ability of a substance or material to resist degradation or change when exposed to light, particularly ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This phenomenon is crucial in many applications where materials are expected to maintain their properties over time despite light exposure. For example, the color of fabrics, plastics, paints, and inks can fade or change hue due to photodegradation.

When light, especially UV light, interacts with molecules, it can transfer energy that breaks chemical bonds. This process, known as photolysis, can lead to the formation of new chemical species, altering the material's appearance, strength, or other functional characteristics. Different materials have varying degrees of photostability, influenced by their chemical structure and the presence of stabilizing additives.

To enhance photostability, manufacturers often incorporate UV absorbers or light stabilizers into their products. UV absorbers work by absorbing the harmful UV radiation and dissipating it as heat, preventing it from reaching and damaging the material. Light stabilizers, such as hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS), function by scavenging free radicals that are generated during the photodegradation process, thereby interrupting the chain reaction of degradation. The testing and measurement of photostability are important for quality control and for predicting the lifespan of products exposed to sunlight or other light sources.
