Fotodiódákból is the Hungarian plural term for photodiodes. A photodiode is a semiconductor device that converts light into an electrical current. It is a type of photodetector. When light strikes the photodiode, it generates electron-hole pairs in the depletion region of the p-n junction. These charge carriers are then swept across the junction by the built-in electric field, producing a current proportional to the light intensity.

Photodiodes are used in a wide variety of applications. They can be found in light meters for cameras, automatic streetlights, remote controls, and even in solar cells, although the latter are typically referred to as solar cells or photovoltaic cells due to their primary function of energy generation rather than just detection. Different types of photodiodes exist, including p-n photodiodes, p-i-n photodiodes, and avalanche photodiodes, each offering different performance characteristics regarding speed, sensitivity, and noise. The sensitivity of a photodiode is often described by its quantum efficiency, which is the ratio of the number of charge carriers collected to the number of incident photons. The spectral response of a photodiode indicates the range of light wavelengths it is most sensitive to.
