Fossil preservation occurs through several physical and chemical mechanisms. Common modes include permineralization, where mineral-rich water fills pore spaces; replacement, where original material is dissolved and minerals precipitate; carbonization, leaving a carbon film; and the formation of external or internal molds and casts. Other pathways include pyritization, phosphatization, and preservation in amber, ice, or tar. Fidelity depends on burial conditions, sedimentology, mineralogy, and post-depositional alteration.

In practice, preservation involves careful collection, documentation of provenance and context, and gentle preparation to remove matrix while preserving features. Conservators apply consolidants and protective coatings when needed, and specimens are stabilized for transport, storage, and display. Museums and field researchers maintain standardized records, curate exposure, and use digital records and 3D imaging to complement physical preservation. Ethical considerations include provenance, legal permits, and respect for source communities and sovereign rights.

Preservation biases influence paleontological interpretation; exceptional sites, known as Lagerstätten, provide detailed remains but are rare, so reconstructions often rely on more incomplete material. Ongoing advances in imaging, non-destructive analysis, and material science improve study while preserving specimens for future research.
