Fortove is a term used in several Slavic languages to denote forts and fortifications. In Czech and Slovak, fortové (or fortový) is an adjective meaning “of or relating to a fort,” while the plural fortovy can refer to a fortification complex. In English-language contexts the concept is usually described with the words fort, fortress, or fortification. The term can also appear as a proper name in some places.

Fortove refers to defensive works built to guard towns, borders, or strategic routes. Their architectural features typically include defensive walls or ramparts, bastions or outworks, gateways, and often moats or ditches; later developments may include casemates, artillery batteries, and underground magazines. Layouts vary from linear fortifications to star forts and fortress citadels, shaped by the period and technology of their construction.

Historically, fortove emerged in antiquity and evolved through medieval castle rings to early modern bastioned systems designed to withstand artillery. From the 18th to the 19th centuries, continental fortifications influenced European warfare, and in the 20th century, trench networks and bunkers reflected changing tactics.

Today, many fortove survive as cultural heritage. They are preserved as museums, memorials, or parks, and some have been repurposed for housing, cultural venues, or tourism. They remain important for understanding military architecture and regional history.
