Formastes is a term that appears in speculative biology and fiction to designate a proposed clade of organisms with highly modular morphology and reversible metamorphosis. The concept is used to explore how evolution might solve ecological challenges through body-plan plasticity. The name Formastes comes from combining forma, Latin for form, with a plural suffix reminiscent of scientific taxon names.

In the fictional framework, Formastes would consist of modular units called formlets that can detach, rearrange, and reattach to create new body configurations. Organisms might switch from a sessile, planar form to a mobile, tentacled variant, depending on environmental cues. Reproduction could involve budding of formlets or fragmentation of the whole organism, enabling rapid replication and lineage diversification.
