A football play is a coordinated sequence by the offensive team intended to advance the ball toward the opponent’s goal line or to gain a first down. A play begins at the snap after a pre-snap formation and a chosen play call. The action is executed by the players until the ball is dead.

Plays fall into two broad categories: running plays and passing plays. Running plays aim to gain yardage by rushing the ball through or around the defensive line, using blocking schemes and designed runs such as inside zone, power, counter, sweep, and draw. Passing plays involve the quarterback delivering the ball to receivers through various routes, including quick passes, slants, hitches, posts, and go routes.

A play’s design includes formation, personnel, motion, cadence, blocking schemes, and route concepts. The quarterback, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, and offensive linemen each have specialized roles, while the defense reacts with alignment and pressure. After the snap, execution covers blocking, route running, handoffs, pitches, or a pass, with outcomes ranging from a gain to a turnover.

Coaches select plays to exploit opponent weaknesses, manage the clock, and adapt to personnel and game situation. Efficiency is measured by yardage gained, first downs, touchdowns, and turnover avoidance. Over a game or season, teams seek a strategic balance between run and pass and may employ misdirection or trick plays to create favorable matchups.
