Fonderna, or the funds, are collective investment schemes that pool money from many investors to purchase a diversified portfolio of securities or other assets. Managed by professional fund managers, they aim to spread risk and provide access to markets that individual savers might not easily reach. In Sweden, the market largely consists of UCITS-compliant funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), offered by banks, asset managers, or dedicated fund groups.

Types include aktiefonder (equity funds), räntefonder (bond funds), and blandfonder (mixed funds). There are also indexfonder that track a market index and börshandlade fonder (ETFs) that trade on a stock exchange. Actively managed funds seek to outperform benchmarks, while passively managed funds aim to replicate them at lower costs.

Fund units for mutual funds are typically bought and redeemed at the fund's net asset value (NAV), calculated daily. ETF units trade on stock exchanges and have intraday prices.

Fees include management fees (förvaltningsavgift) and sometimes performance fees or sales charges, though many funds in Sweden have low or no entry charges.

Fondernas regulation is overseen by Finansinspektionen (FI) within a framework that includes EU directives such as UCITS, which set rules on diversification, transparency, and protection of investors. Investors should consider risk, diversification, costs, and their personal time horizon before choosing a fund.
