Finansinspektionen

Finansinspektionen (FI) is Sweden's financial supervisory authority. It is a government agency with the remit to promote financial stability, market integrity, and consumer protection in Sweden’s financial system. FI licenses and supervises a broad range of financial actors and services, including banks and credit institutions, mortgage institutions, insurers (life and non-life), investment firms, fund managers, securities markets, and essential payment and settlement services, as well as financial market infrastructure such as clearing systems.

FI conducts supervision through licensing, ongoing oversight, on-site examinations, and investigations. It has the authority to require remedial measures, impose conditions or sanctions, withdraw licenses, and take other supervisory actions to address risks or misconduct. The agency also monitors risks to the financial system, publishes analyses and warnings, and contributes to the supervision of major financial groups and cross-border activities.

The agency operates under the Swedish government and coordinates with the Ministry of Finance. It also collaborates with international and EU authorities and implements European Union financial regulation in Sweden, including rules established by the European Supervisory Authorities and the EU capital and market frameworks.

Finansinspektionen was established in 1991 as part of a reform of financial supervision, succeeding earlier bodies such as the Bankinspektionen. It is based in Sweden and serves to strengthen trust in the financial system.
