Folyadékfelület refers to the boundary between a liquid and another phase, most commonly a gas such as air, or another immiscible liquid. This surface is a key area where various physical phenomena occur, including surface tension, evaporation, and condensation. The properties of the folyadékfelület are dictated by the cohesive forces between the liquid molecules. These forces are stronger within the bulk of the liquid than at the surface, leading to a net inward pull on the surface molecules. This inward pull creates a state of tension in the surface, akin to a stretched membrane, which is known as surface tension.

Surface tension is responsible for several observable effects, such as the formation of droplets, the ability of small insects to walk on water, and the capillary action observed in narrow tubes. When a liquid is in contact with a solid surface, the interaction between the liquid molecules and the solid molecules, known as adhesion, also plays a role. The balance between cohesion (liquid-liquid attraction) and adhesion (liquid-solid attraction) determines whether the liquid will wet the surface and the shape of the meniscus, the curved upper surface of a liquid in a container.

Evaporation is the process by which liquid molecules gain enough energy to overcome the intermolecular forces at the folyadékfelület and escape into the gaseous phase. Conversely, condensation is the process where gas molecules lose energy and return to the liquid phase at the folyadékfelület. The rate of evaporation is influenced by factors such as temperature, surface area, and the presence of other substances.
