foliolule
A foliolule is a small leaf-like subdivision of a compound leaf, typically much smaller than a standard leaflet. In many plants, leaves are divided into leaflets arranged along a main axis (the rachis); foliolules are the smallest persistent units of such segmentation and may be the final units in a bi- or tripinnate leaf. They are usually attached by a short stalk (petiolule) or are sessile on the rachis, and their size can vary from a few millimeters to a centimeter or more, depending on the species. The term emphasizes the diminutive scale of the structure, and in some descriptions foliolules are treated as distinct from leaflets for homology reasons, while in others they are regarded as leaflets when the segmentation forms a continuous, functional photosynthetic surface.
