Fogyóelektródás, also known as consumable electrode welding, refers to a group of arc welding processes where the electrode used to create the weld pool is consumed during the process. This means the electrode itself melts and becomes part of the deposited weld metal. The primary purpose of the consumable electrode is to act as both the heat source, through an electric arc, and the filler material to join the base metals.

Common types of fogyóelektródás welding include Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), often referred to as MIG (Metal Inert Gas) or MAG (Metal Active Gas) welding, and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), commonly known as stick welding. In GMAW, a continuous wire electrode is fed through a welding gun, and a shielding gas is supplied to protect the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination. In SMAW, a flux-coated electrode is used, where the coating provides shielding gas and slag to protect the weld.

The selection of the appropriate consumable electrode depends on the base metal being joined, the desired weld properties, and the welding environment. Factors such as electrode material, diameter, and composition are critical for achieving sound and strong welds. Fogyóelektródás processes are widely used in various industries due to their versatility, efficiency, and ability to produce high-quality welds on a range of materials and thicknesses.
