Fluorikaasulla refers to a group of synthetic chemicals containing fluorine. These substances are known for their stability and non-flammability, which has led to their widespread use in various industrial and consumer applications. Historically, they have been employed as refrigerants, propellants in aerosol cans, blowing agents for foams, and solvents. Common examples include chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

While beneficial for their functional properties, fluorinated gases have significant environmental implications. Many of these compounds are potent greenhouse gases, contributing to global warming. CFCs, in particular, were identified as a major cause of ozone layer depletion, leading to their phased elimination under the Montreal Protocol. HCFCs, while less damaging to the ozone layer, are still greenhouse gases and are also being phased out. Due to these environmental concerns, research and development are focused on finding more sustainable alternatives. These include natural refrigerants with lower global warming potential, such as ammonia and carbon dioxide, as well as newer generations of fluorinated gases with significantly reduced environmental impact. The transition away from high-GWP fluorinated gases is a key aspect of global efforts to combat climate change and protect the ozone layer.
