A flottörbrytare, often translated as a float switch, is a mechanical device used to detect the level of liquid in a tank or container. It operates on the principle of buoyancy. The core component is a buoyant object, typically a float, which is attached to a lever arm. As the liquid level rises, it lifts the float. This upward movement of the float actuates a switch mechanism, either opening or closing an electrical circuit. Conversely, as the liquid level falls, the float descends, and the switch returns to its original state.

Flottörbrytare are commonly employed in a wide range of applications. In domestic settings, they are found in sump pumps to automatically remove water when it reaches a certain level, and in boilers to maintain a consistent water supply. Industrially, they are used in fuel tanks, water treatment plants, and chemical processing to control pumps, activate alarms, or shut down equipment based on liquid levels. Their simplicity, reliability, and relatively low cost make them a popular choice for level sensing. They can be configured for normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) operation, depending on whether the circuit is intended to be completed or broken at a specific liquid level. Maintenance typically involves ensuring the float is free to move and the switch mechanism is functioning correctly.
