Flocculation and coagulation are processes used in water treatment and other industries to remove suspended particles. Coagulation involves adding chemicals, known as coagulants, to destabilize the charged particles that are keeping them suspended. These coagulants neutralize the negative charges, allowing the particles to clump together. Flocculation then follows, where gentle mixing encourages these destabilized particles to aggregate into larger, heavier masses called flocs. These flocs are more easily removed from the water through subsequent processes like sedimentation or filtration.

The effectiveness of flocculation and coagulation depends on several factors, including the type and dosage of coagulant used, the pH of the water, temperature, and the degree of mixing. Common coagulants include aluminum sulfate (alum), ferric chloride, and polyaluminum chloride. The pH is critical because coagulants often work best within a specific pH range. Improper pH can reduce the efficiency of coagulation, leading to poor floc formation. Temperature can affect the rate of chemical reactions and particle movement. The mixing intensity during flocculation must be sufficient to promote collisions between particles but not so strong as to break apart the forming flocs.

These processes are essential for producing clear and safe water for drinking and industrial use. They are also applied in wastewater treatment to remove pollutants, in the paper industry to retain fillers and fibers, and in mining for mineral processing. By aggregating fine suspended solids into larger flocs, these techniques significantly improve the efficiency of solid-liquid separation.
