floatlijn

Floatlijn is a term used in Dutch fisheries to describe the upper, buoyant edge of a fishing net or other buoyant gear. The float line is a rope or cord to which buoys (floats) are attached, allowing the net mouth to stay at or near the surface while the lower edge sinks or remains below. In pelagic and coastal nets, the float line works with the lead line at the bottom to create the net’s profile and position in the water.

Construction and materials: The float line is typically made of synthetic fibers such as nylon or polyethylene because of buoyancy and resistance to saltwater. In traditional gear, natural fibers were used. The line may be hollow-core or filled with buoyant material to increase afloat life, and floats are spaced along the line at regular intervals, though spacing varies by gear type.

Functions and usage: The float line helps keep the net open and properly oriented in the water, contributing to an effective catch by maintaining the mouth near the surface. It is part of the overall rigging that includes the lead line on the opposite side, which helps balance weight and depth. The line and its components are subject to wear from abrasion, salt, and fouling.

Maintenance and variation: Regular inspection and replacement of damaged sections are common, with attention to knot integrity and splice quality. The exact materials and spacing vary by fishery, region, and target species, reflecting local regulations and gear design.
