Fire extinction refers to the process of stopping a fire. This is typically achieved by removing one or more elements of the fire triangle: fuel, heat, and oxygen. Different methods are employed depending on the type of fire and the materials involved.

Water is a common extinguishing agent, effective against Class A fires (ordinary combustibles like wood and paper) by cooling the fuel and reducing oxygen. Foam can be used for Class B fires (flammable liquids) by forming a blanket that smothers the flames and prevents vapors from igniting. Dry chemical extinguishers are versatile, suitable for Class A, B, and C fires (electrical equipment). They work by interrupting the chemical reaction of combustion and sometimes by smothering. Clean agents, like halocarbons or inert gases, are used for high-value areas or where water damage is a concern, such as data centers or museums. The selection of the appropriate fire extinguisher is critical for effective and safe fire suppression. Firefighting professionals also utilize a range of techniques and equipment to control and extinguish larger fires, often involving significant quantities of water or specialized foam.
