A filtreringsbädd, often translated as a filter bed or filtration bed, is a layer of granular material used in various water treatment processes. Its primary function is to physically remove suspended solids and other particulate matter from a liquid. The effectiveness of a filtreringsbädd relies on the size, shape, and arrangement of the filter media. Common materials include sand, gravel, anthracite, or combinations thereof.

As water passes through the filtreringsbädd, particles become trapped within the interstitial spaces between the granules. This process can occur through several mechanisms, including straining, sedimentation, interception, and adhesion. The depth and porosity of the bed are important parameters that influence its capacity and efficiency. Over time, the bed can become clogged, requiring a process called backwashing to restore its filtering capability. Backwashing involves reversing the flow of water through the bed, dislodging the trapped solids, and flushing them away.

Filtreringsbäddar are widely employed in municipal water treatment plants to produce potable water, in industrial processes for wastewater treatment, and in aquaculture systems for maintaining water quality. They are a fundamental component of many filtration systems due to their reliability and cost-effectiveness in removing a broad range of impurities.
