Filterkorgen, or filter basket, is a component of espresso machines that holds ground coffee during extraction. It sits in the portafilter and is removable for loading and cleaning. The basket has a perforated bottom to allow water to flow through while retaining the grounds.

Function and design: When the portafilter is locked into the group head, hot water is forced through the coffee bed. The basket’s perforations shape the flow, affecting extraction and crema. Baskets vary by shot size (single, double) and by hole pattern and flow characteristics.

Variants and sizes: The common professional basket is about 58 millimetres in diameter, but other machines use different sizes. Non-pressurized baskets are favored by experienced users for control; pressurized baskets can be more forgiving for beginners. Hole configurations influence resistance and extraction.

Materials and compatibility: Most baskets are made of stainless steel and are designed to fit specific portafilters and group heads. Check compatibility when replacing baskets.

Care and maintenance: Rinse the basket after use to remove oils. Avoid soap; if needed, use manufacturer-approved cleaners. Periodically soak in a coffee-machine cleaner to remove residue. Inspect for worn holes or deformation and replace as needed.
