fidai

Fidai, also romanized fidāʼī, fida'i, or fidaiyeh, is a term from Arabic fidāʾ meaning sacrifice. In Persian and Turkish usage it describes a self-sacrificing fighter who dedicates themselves to a cause, sometimes unto death, and is used as a designation for members of certain militant organizations.

In Iran, fidai has historically referred to fighters associated with Islamist or nationalist guerrilla groups characterized by martyrdom rhetoric. Notably, the Fada'iyan-e Islam emerged in the mid-20th century, whose members carried out assassinations and attacks intended to defend religious law and mobilize support.
