fibrotisaatioon

Fibrotisaatioon is a term encountered in Finnish-language medical writing to denote the process of fibrotisation, that is, the formation of fibrous tissue in response to tissue injury or chronic inflammation. In international medical terminology the corresponding concept is fibrosis or fibrogenesis; fibrotisaatioon is not a widely standardized term in English-language literature.

Definition and mechanism: Fibrosis involves the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix, particularly collagen type I and III, leading to scar tissue and altered tissue architecture. The process is driven by activation of resident fibroblasts and recruitment of progenitor cells, differentiation into myofibroblasts, increased collagen synthesis, and impaired matrix degradation. Signaling pathways such as transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) and mechanical stretch influence progression.

Clinical relevance: Fibrosis can affect many organs and is a common consequence of chronic injury or inflammation. It can cause stiffness and functional impairment, ranging from mild to organ failure. Common examples include hepatic fibrosis (cirrhosis), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, renal interstitial fibrosis, and myocardial fibrosis.

Diagnosis and treatment: Diagnosis combines clinical history, imaging (e.g., high-resolution CT or MRI), and, when necessary, histology showing dense collagen deposition. Serum biomarkers may support assessment. Treatment targets the underlying cause and may include antifibrotic medications (e.g., pirfenidone, nintedanib) for selected diseases, disease-specific therapies, and supportive care. Liver transplantation can be considered in advanced cirrhosis.

Terminology note: As a Finnish word, fibrotisaatioon reflects Finnish morphology; it is not standard in English texts, where fibrosis or fibrogenesis is preferred.
