Fibrinogeen is a glycoprotein produced by the liver that plays a crucial role in blood clotting. It is one of the most abundant proteins in plasma, the liquid component of blood. In its soluble form, fibrinogen circulates in the bloodstream. When an injury occurs and a blood vessel is damaged, a cascade of reactions is initiated, leading to the conversion of fibrinogen into fibrin.

This transformation is catalyzed by the enzyme thrombin. Fibrin molecules then polymerize to form a mesh-like network that traps blood cells, such as platelets and red blood cells, effectively forming a blood clot. This clot stops bleeding and allows the damaged tissue to begin the process of healing.

The level of fibrinogen in the blood can be an indicator of various health conditions. Elevated fibrinogen levels, known as hyperfibrinogenemia, can be associated with inflammation, infection, cardiovascular disease, and certain types of cancer. Conversely, low fibrinogen levels, or hypofibrinogenemia, can lead to impaired blood clotting and an increased risk of bleeding. These low levels can be inherited or acquired due to liver disease, malnutrition, or disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Fibrinogen levels are often monitored in clinical settings to assess a patient's clotting ability and overall health status.
