Fibermikrovågor, or fiber microwave, is a field focused on transmitting and processing microwave-frequency signals using optical fiber networks. In practice, microwave signals—typically from about 1 GHz up to tens of GHz—are generated at a transmitter, modulated onto an optical carrier, transported over fiber, and converted back to electrical form at the receiver. This approach is commonly referred to as RF over fiber (RFoF) or microwave over fiber, leveraging the low loss, high bandwidth, and electromagnetic immunity of optical fiber.

Implementation methods vary but share a core goal: carry microwave information with optical means to improve reach and isolation. The microwave signal can be directly modulated onto a laser or carried by an externally modulated optical carrier. At the far end, a photodetector converts the optical signal back to an electrical microwave signal. Some systems use photonic upconversion or heterodyne techniques to shift frequencies for distribution or processing, enabling integration with existing optical networks and wireless infrastructure.

Applications of fibermikrovågor include cellular network backhaul and fronthaul, distributed antenna systems, and radar or satellite communications that require high bandwidth and low electromagnetic interference. The technology supports centralized processing and remote radio units, enabling flexible and scalable network architectures.

Advantages include broad bandwidth, immunity to RF interference, and secure, transportable signal distribution. Challenges involve managing fiber dispersion and nonlinearity at high frequencies, maintaining phase stability, and the cost and complexity of photonic components. Ongoing research focuses on integration with silicon photonics, higher efficiency modulators, and compact, low-noise receivers to broaden deployment.
