ferrocyanides
Ferrocyanides are a group of coordination compounds containing the hexacyanoferrate(II) anion, [Fe(CN)6]4-. The iron atom is in the +2 oxidation state and is surrounded by six cyanide ligands. The most common ferrocyanide is potassium ferrocyanide, K4[Fe(CN)6], also known as yellow prussiate of potash. It is a yellow crystalline solid that is soluble in water. Other alkali metal and alkaline earth metal ferrocyanides are also known, as are ammonium ferrocyanide. Ferrocyanides are generally considered to be non-toxic because the cyanide ligands are tightly bound to the iron atom and are not readily released as free cyanide ions.
Historically, ferrocyanides were produced from heating animal matter rich in nitrogen, such as blood, hair, or
