ferdeszög

Ferdeszög is a Hungarian term that denotes an oblique angle or tilt. It describes the angle by which a line, plane, or surface deviates from a reference direction, typically the horizontal. The word combines ferde, meaning inclined or slanted, with szög, meaning angle.

In planar geometry, the ferdeszög of a line with respect to the horizontal is the angle between the line and a horizontal reference line. It can be measured in degrees or radians. When the line rises to the right, the ferdeszög is commonly taken as a positive value between 0 and 90 degrees; a line that falls has a corresponding orientation or sign. A vertical line has a ferdeszög of 90 degrees. For non-vertical lines, the relation to rise and run is given by tan(theta) = rise/run, where theta is the ferdeszög.

Applications of ferdeszög occur across disciplines such as surveying, civil engineering, architecture, carpentry, and manufacturing. It is used to describe slopes, bevel cuts, tilts, and the alignment of components. For example, roof pitch is expressed as a ferdeszög relative to the horizontal, and bevel angles in woodworking are specified as ferdeszög to achieve the desired cut.
