Fenolharpikser, also known as phenolic resins, are a class of synthetic polymers produced by the reaction of phenol with formaldehyde. These resins are known for their excellent thermal stability, chemical resistance, and electrical insulating properties. The reaction can be carried out under acidic or basic conditions, leading to different types of resins with varying properties.

The two primary types of phenolic resins are novolacs and resols. Novolacs are formed under acidic conditions with an excess of phenol and require a curing agent, typically hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA), to crosslink and form a rigid thermoset material. Resols are produced under basic conditions with an excess of formaldehyde and are self-curing upon heating, as they contain reactive methylol groups that can crosslink.

Phenolic resins find widespread applications due to their versatility. They are used as binders in the production of plywood, particleboard, and laminates, providing structural integrity and water resistance. In the automotive industry, they are employed in brake pads, clutch facings, and insulation materials due to their heat resistance and friction properties.
