A felületintegrál, sometimes called a surface integral, is a mathematical concept used to integrate functions over surfaces in three-dimensional space. It can be used to calculate quantities such as the flux of a vector field through a surface or the mass of a thin shell with a given surface density. There are two main types of surface integrals: scalar surface integrals and vector surface integrals.

A scalar surface integral integrates a scalar-valued function f(x, y, z) over a surface S. This is analogous to a line integral for curves. The integral is typically computed by parameterizing the surface S with two parameters, say u and v, and then integrating the function f(x(u,v), y(u,v), z(u,v)) multiplied by the magnitude of the cross product of the partial derivatives of the parameterization with respect to u and v. This magnitude represents the infinitesimal area element on the surface.

A vector surface integral, often referred to as the flux integral, integrates a vector-valued function F(x, y, z) over a surface S. This integral calculates the total flow of the vector field F across the surface S. It is computed by taking the dot product of the vector field F with the outward-pointing normal vector to the surface, and then integrating this dot product over the surface. Similar to the scalar surface integral, parameterization is often employed, and the integral involves the cross product of the partial derivatives of the parameterization, but this time dotted with the vector field. The result gives the net flow of the vector field through the surface. Surface integrals are fundamental tools in various fields, including physics (e.g., electromagnetism, fluid dynamics) and engineering.
