Felületfeszítés is the Hungarian term for surface tension. Surface tension is a property of liquids that describes the tendency of liquid surfaces to shrink into the minimum surface area possible. It arises from the cohesive nature of liquid molecules, which are attracted to each other. Within the bulk of the liquid, each molecule is pulled equally in all directions by neighboring molecules. However, molecules at the surface experience a net inward pull because there are no molecules above them to counteract the attraction.

This inward force causes the surface molecules to pack more closely together, creating a thin, elastic-like "skin" on the liquid's surface. This phenomenon explains why small insects can walk on water, why water forms droplets, and why a liquid will rise in a narrow tube (capillary action). The strength of surface tension depends on the specific liquid and the temperature; generally, surface tension decreases as temperature increases. It is measured in units of force per unit length (e.g., newtons per meter) or energy per unit area (e.g., joules per square meter).
