Farat, also transliterated as Furat, most commonly refers to the Euphrates River, a major waterway in Western Asia. In Arabic, the river is called al-Furat, and in Turkish it is Firat. The term is tied to one of the great rivers of Mesopotamia and has historical and cultural significance across the region.

Geographically, the Euphrates originates in the eastern Turkish highlands and flows generally southeast across Turkey, then through Syria and Iraq. It traverses the plateau and plains of Mesopotamia and joins with the Tigris to form the Shatt al-Arab, which empties into the Persian Gulf. The river system runs roughly 2,800 kilometers (about 1,740 miles) in its course and has long served as a corridor for trade, agriculture, and settlement.
