Facturerings, or fakturering, is the process of creating and sending invoices for goods or services. It records a claim for payment and constitutes a key part of accounts receivable and cash flow management. An invoice formalizes the transaction and serves as evidence for both buyer and seller.

A typical invoice includes: seller and buyer identifiers; invoice date and number; description of goods or services; quantities and unit prices; discounts; tax details (such as VAT or GST) and tax amounts; the total amount due; payment terms and instructions; and delivery or service dates. In many jurisdictions invoices must meet legal and tax requirements, including the display of tax identification numbers and statutory rates.

Invoicing formats vary. Paper invoices persist, but electronic invoicing has become common, often using standards or platforms that enable secure transmission. Electronic formats may be XML or PDF, and many regions support electronic invoicing through networks or government programs, such as PEPPOL in parts of Europe. Electronic invoicing can improve accuracy, speed, and compliance.

Process and lifecycle: order or contract, delivery of goods or services, invoice generation, invoice delivery, payment, and reconciliation in accounting records. Invoices may be accompanied by supporting documents and can be followed by credit notes, debit notes, or pro forma invoices. Late payments trigger reminders and, in some cases, penalties or dispute resolution.

Regional practices vary, but common themes include data retention, data standards, and secure handling of financial information. In many jurisdictions, invoicing is tightly connected to value-added tax systems and tax authority reporting.
