factorVIIacalcium
FactorVIIacalcium refers to the role of calcium ions in the activity of coagulation factor VIIa within the extrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. Calcium is a required cofactor for the assembly of the tissue factor–factor VIIa complex and for the efficient proteolytic activation of downstream substrates, primarily factor X to Xa and, to a lesser extent, factor IX to IXa.
Biochemical basis: Factor VII is secreted as a zymogen and becomes activated to factor VIIa. In the
Clinical relevance: Calcium dependence is a fundamental aspect of the extrinsic pathway’s function. Disruptions in calcium
