Fájlrendszer is the Hungarian term for file system. A file system is the method and data structure that an operating system uses to control how data is stored and retrieved. It is the organizational structure that dictates how files are named, stored, and managed on a storage device, such as a hard drive, SSD, or USB drive. Without a file system, data placed into a storage space would be one large body of indistinguishable data.

They also handle file attributes like permissions, ownership, and timestamps. Different types of file systems exist, each with its own characteristics and advantages. Examples include FAT32, NTFS, ext4, and HFS+. These systems differ in their support for file sizes, partition sizes, security features, and performance.

The primary role of a file system is to provide a logical view of the storage space to the user and applications, abstracting away the underlying physical details of how data is actually written to the storage medium. This allows users to interact with files and directories in a familiar and organized manner, without needing to worry about the low-level mechanics of data storage.
