Extremophiles are organisms that thrive in physically or geochemically extreme conditions that are detrimental to most life on Earth. These environments often include extreme temperatures, high pressures, extreme acidity or alkalinity, high radiation levels, and high concentrations of heavy metals. Extremophiles are found in a wide variety of habitats, such as deep-sea hydrothermal vents, hot springs, glaciers, deserts, and even within radioactive waste.

Scientists study extremophiles for several reasons. Their unique adaptations to extreme environments offer insights into the limits of life and the potential for life to exist on other planets or moons. Furthermore, the enzymes produced by extremophiles, known as extremozymes, can function under harsh conditions and have applications in various industrial processes, including biotechnology, medicine, and manufacturing.

The classification of extremophiles is based on the extreme conditions they inhabit. For example, thermophiles thrive in high temperatures, while psychrophiles prefer cold environments. Barophiles (or piezophiles) are adapted to high pressure, acidophiles prefer acidic conditions, and alkaliphiles prefer alkaline conditions. Halophiles, on the other hand, are salt-loving organisms. Many extremophiles exhibit multiple adaptations, being classified as, for instance, thermoacidophiles or psychrophilic halophiles. The discovery and understanding of these resilient organisms continue to expand our knowledge of biology and the potential for life in diverse and challenging niches.
