extrapola

Extrapola is a conjugated form of the verb extrapolar in Spanish and Portuguese. In both languages, extrapola corresponds to the third-person singular present indicative form (he/she extrapolates; you formal extrapolates in Spanish; ele/ela extrapola, você extrapola in Portuguese) and, in Spanish, to the affirmative informal imperative when addressing someone you know (extrapola).

Extrapolar means to extend or infer beyond known data, limits, or boundaries. In scientific and statistical contexts, extrapolation refers to estimating values outside the observed range by extending a recognized pattern or trend. It is a common tool in forecasting, model testing, and planning, but it relies on assumptions that the existing pattern remains valid beyond the available data.

Usage and examples. In Spanish, one might say: “La investigación extrapola los resultados a una población mayor.” In Portuguese: “Os dados foram extrapolados para o próximo período.” In everyday language, extrapola can appear as a present-tense statement about someone’s action, as in “El investigador extrapola las cifras” or “O pesquisador extrapola os números.” It is also used to describe the act of applying a rule or a pattern to a situation beyond its original scope.
