Extirpare is a Latin verb meaning "to root out" or "to eradicate," often used in biological and ecological contexts to describe the complete removal of a species from a particular geographic area, though not necessarily from the entire world. The term is distinct from *extinction*, which refers to the global disappearance of a species. When a species is extirpated, it may still persist in other regions, allowing for potential recovery if conditions improve.

The process of extirpation can occur naturally due to environmental changes, such as climate shifts or habitat destruction, or it may result from human activities like hunting, deforestation, or invasive species introduction. For example, gray wolves were extirpated from much of the eastern United States in the early 20th century due to intensive hunting and habitat loss, though reintroduction efforts later restored their presence in some areas.
