Extinctions are the complete disappearance of a species from Earth. This can happen gradually over time or very suddenly. Scientists recognize that extinction is a natural process, and over the vast history of life, many more species have gone extinct than currently exist.

The causes of extinction are varied. Natural events such as asteroid impacts, massive volcanic eruptions, and significant climate change can lead to widespread extinctions. For example, the asteroid impact at the end of the Cretaceous period is widely believed to have caused the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs.

More recently, human activities have become a significant driver of extinction. Habitat destruction through deforestation, agriculture, and urbanization reduces the available space and resources for many species. Overhunting and overfishing can deplete populations to unsustainable levels. Pollution of air, water, and soil can directly harm organisms or disrupt ecosystems. The introduction of invasive species can outcompete native species for resources or prey upon them. Climate change, driven by human emissions of greenhouse gases, is also accelerating the rate of extinction by altering habitats and weather patterns faster than many species can adapt.

The loss of a species has ripple effects throughout an ecosystem. Each species plays a role, and its removal can disrupt food webs, pollination, seed dispersal, and other vital ecological processes. Understanding the causes and consequences of extinction is crucial for conservation efforts aimed at preventing further biodiversity loss.
