Exoplanet hunting, also known as exoplanet detection, is the process of finding planets outside of our solar system. These celestial bodies are called exoplanets. The vastness of space makes direct observation of most exoplanets challenging, so astronomers employ indirect methods to infer their presence.

One of the most successful techniques is the transit method. This involves observing a star for a periodic dip in its brightness. Such a dip suggests that a planet is passing in front of the star from our perspective, blocking a small portion of its light. The Kepler Space Telescope and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) have been instrumental in discovering thousands of exoplanets using this method.

Another common method is the radial velocity method, also known as the Doppler wobble. This technique detects the slight gravitational tug a planet exerts on its host star. As the planet orbits, it causes the star to wobble back and forth. This wobble can be detected by observing shifts in the star's light spectrum, indicating whether the star is moving towards or away from us.

Direct imaging, while less common due to the difficulty of separating a faint planet from its bright star, is also used. This involves using advanced telescopes and adaptive optics to capture actual images of exoplanets. Microlensing is another method that exploits the gravitational lensing effect of a star and its planet to magnify the light of a more distant star.

The study of exoplanets is a rapidly advancing field, providing crucial insights into planetary formation, the potential for life beyond Earth, and the diversity of planetary systems in the galaxy.
