Excretio is a biological process by which metabolic waste products are eliminated from an organism. This is essential for maintaining homeostasis, the stable internal environment of the body. Various organs and systems are involved in excretio, depending on the complexity of the organism and its specific waste products.

In animals, the primary excretory organs are the kidneys, which filter blood to remove nitrogenous wastes, excess salts, and water, forming urine. This urine is then transported to the bladder for storage and subsequently eliminated from the body through the urethra. Other excretory routes include the skin, which eliminates some waste products through sweat, and the lungs, which expel carbon dioxide, a gaseous metabolic byproduct. The digestive system also plays a role, as undigested food material is eliminated as feces, though this is often considered egestion rather than true excretio, as it does not involve metabolic processing.

Plants also excrete waste, though the mechanisms differ. They can release certain waste products into the soil or atmosphere. For example, excess salts can be secreted by glands on the leaves, and carbon dioxide is released during respiration. Some plants store waste products in vacuoles or shed parts like leaves and bark, effectively removing them from the living organism.

The nature of the waste products excreted often reflects the organism's metabolic processes and its environment. For example, aquatic animals often excrete ammonia, which is highly toxic but easily diluted in water, while terrestrial animals typically convert ammonia into less toxic forms like urea or uric acid, which require less water for elimination.
