Evaporites are sedimentary rocks formed by the evaporation of water. This process concentrates dissolved minerals in the remaining water until it becomes saturated and the minerals precipitate out. These precipitated minerals, known as evaporite minerals, accumulate on the bottom of the evaporating basin. Common evaporite minerals include halite (rock salt), gypsum, and anhydrite.

Evaporite deposits are typically found in arid or semi-arid environments where evaporation rates are high and water sources are limited. These environments can include shallow marine basins, salt flats, playas, and desert lakes. The type of evaporite mineral that precipitates depends on the specific chemistry of the water and the stage of evaporation. For instance, calcium sulfates like gypsum often precipitate before halite.

The formation of evaporites requires specific geological conditions. Typically, a basin must be at least partially enclosed to allow for restricted water circulation, promoting evaporation without constant replenishment. Over geological time, repeated cycles of evaporation and influx of new water can lead to thick sequences of evaporite deposits.

Evaporites have significant economic importance. Halite is a source of salt for consumption and industrial uses. Gypsum is crucial for producing plaster and drywall. Anhydrite is also used in construction materials and as a soil conditioner. Furthermore, evaporite formations can act as excellent seals in the Earth's crust, trapping hydrocarbons and making them important targets for oil and gas exploration. They can also host unique microbial ecosystems adapted to hypersaline conditions.
