The Eurózónán, or Eurozone, refers to the group of European Union (EU) member states that have adopted the euro (€) as their official currency. Established in 1999, the Eurozone operates as a single currency area, facilitating economic integration and trade among its participants. The euro is managed by the European Central Bank (ECB), based in Frankfurt, Germany, which oversees monetary policy for the region.

As of 2024, the Eurozone consists of 20 EU member states: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic (though it uses the koruna as its national currency, it participates in the Exchange Rate Mechanism II), Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain. These countries share a common monetary policy, meaning interest rates and money supply are coordinated centrally rather than set individually by each nation.

The introduction of the euro aimed to reduce transaction costs, improve price transparency, and enhance economic stability within Europe. It also strengthened the EU’s economic influence globally. However, the Eurozone faces challenges such as differing economic conditions among member states, which can lead to disparities in competitiveness and debt levels. Some countries have experienced economic struggles, including sovereign debt crises, which have required coordination among EU institutions for resolution.

The Eurozone remains a key component of the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), a framework designed to promote economic convergence and sustainable growth. While not all EU members participate, the euro is widely used as a secondary currency in several non-EU countries, including Montenegro, Kosovo, and parts of Africa and the Caribbean. The Eurozone continues to evolve, with ongoing debates about expansion, reforms, and the role of digital currencies in the future.
