Ethylphenols are a class of phenolic compounds consisting of a phenol ring with an ethyl substituent. The term commonly refers to the three positional isomers: 2-ethylphenol, 3-ethylphenol, and 4-ethylphenol, collectively known as o-, m-, and p-ethylphenol.

Natural occurrence and production: They occur in trace amounts in coal tar and in some essential oils. Industrially, mono-ethylphenols can be prepared by alkylation of phenol with ethylating agents in the presence of a Lewis or Bronsted acid catalyst; the reaction yields a mixture of ortho, meta, and para isomers which are then separated. They can also be generated as intermediates in the synthesis of fragrances, dyes, and polymer additives.

Properties and applications: Ethylphenols are typically colorless liquids or low-melting solids. They possess a phenolic odor and exhibit typical phenolic reactivity, including acidity and the ability to undergo further electrophilic substitution. In industry they serve as intermediates in the production of fragrance and flavor compounds, dyes, antioxidants, and specialty chemicals. Individual isomers differ in odor and reactivity.

Safety and environment: Ethylphenols are irritants to skin and eyes and can be harmful if inhaled or ingested. They are flammable and may pose hazards to aquatic life.
