Ethnonymdepends is a concept in onomastics and sociolinguistics that describes how the designation of a people—the ethnonym—depends on context, authority, and historical moment. The label a group is called can reflect self-identification (endonym), external naming (exonym), or a negotiated compromise between communities, states, and institutions. Because ethnonyms are not neutral containers but social signs, their form, spelling, and scope can change with political power, language policy, and media practices.

Several factors influence ethnonymdepends: who is naming (community leaders, researchers, governments), the setting (academic, administrative, or popular discourse), and the purpose (documentation, diplomacy, education).
