Ethmoidectomies are surgical procedures performed to remove tissue from the ethmoid sinuses, which are a group of small, air-filled cavities located within the skull, between the eyes and behind the nose. These procedures are typically undertaken to treat chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, or other conditions that obstruct the ethmoid sinuses and cause symptoms such as facial pain, nasal congestion, and reduced sense of smell.

There are different approaches to performing an ethmoidectomy, including endoscopic and external techniques. Endoscopic ethmoidectomy is the most common method, utilizing a small camera (endoscope) inserted through the nostrils to visualize and remove diseased tissue. This minimally invasive approach generally leads to faster recovery times and less scarring. External ethmoidectomy involves an incision on the face, usually above the inner corner of the eye, and is reserved for more complex cases or when endoscopic access is limited.

The goal of an ethmoidectomy is to improve sinus drainage, relieve symptoms, and prevent further complications. Post-operative care typically involves nasal saline irrigation and may include medication to reduce inflammation. Recovery varies depending on the extent of the surgery, but most patients experience significant symptom improvement within a few weeks. As with any surgical procedure, potential risks and complications exist, and these are discussed with patients prior to the operation.
