Ethery refers to a hypothetical substance or medium that was once thought to permeate all of space and to be the carrier of light waves. This concept was prominent in the 19th century as scientists attempted to explain the propagation of electromagnetic radiation, similar to how sound waves travel through air or water. The luminiferous ether, as it was often called, was envisioned as a stationary and elastic substance that would allow light to travel at a constant speed regardless of the observer's motion.

Numerous experiments were conducted to detect the presence and properties of the ether. The most famous of these was the Michelson-Morley experiment in 1887, which aimed to measure the speed of light in different directions relative to the Earth's presumed motion through the ether. The experiment's null result, meaning it found no evidence of the ether wind, was a significant blow to the theory.

While the ether concept was eventually superseded by Einstein's theory of special relativity, which posits that light travels at a constant speed in a vacuum without the need for a medium, the historical pursuit of the ether played a crucial role in the development of modern physics. It stimulated important scientific inquiry and technological advancements, even though the initial hypothesis proved incorrect. The term "ethery" can therefore be understood in relation to this historical scientific idea.
