estudi

Estudi is a Catalan noun with several related meanings connected to studying, inquiry, and spaces used for study. In its core sense it denotes the act of studying or researching, as in fer un estudi (to conduct a study) or l'estudi d'un fenomen (the study of a phenomenon). It also denotes the field or program of study, for example els estudis universitaris (university studies) or completar els estudis (to finish one's studies).

The term can also refer to a physical space associated with work or creation: l'estudi can mean a study room in a home, or a studio used by artists, designers, or writers, as in l'estudi d'art (the art studio) or l'estudi d'un pintor (a painter's studio).

Etymology: estudi comes from Latin studium 'study, zeal, pursuit' and entered Catalan via Old Catalan forms. It has cognates in other Romance languages, such as Spanish estudio, Portuguese estudo, and Italian studio (singular) or studi (plural).

In contemporary Catalan, estudi is widely used in education, research, culture, and daily life, and the plural estudis is used when referring to academic programs or subjects (els estudis, els estudis universitaris). The word is neutral in tone and broadly understood across Catalan-speaking regions.
