Estetiikka, or aesthetics, is a branch of philosophy that studies beauty, art and taste, and the ways people perceive, experience and evaluate aesthetic objects and events. It addresses questions about what counts as beautiful, how aesthetic judgments are formed, and what role art, nature and everyday life play in human meaning and value. Estetiikka overlaps with psychology, art criticism and cultural studies, but its core is the philosophical analysis of perception, judgment and interpretation.

Historically, estetiikka emerged as a distinct field in the 18th century with Alexander Baumgarten, who defined it as the science of sensory knowledge and beauty. Immanuel Kant argued that aesthetic judgments are subjective yet claim universal validity, rooted in a disinterested form of satisfaction and in the idea of purposiveness without a specific purpose. David Hume emphasized the role of sentiment and communal standards in taste. In the 19th and 20th centuries, various theories about art and beauty—such as formalism, expression theory and the institutional theory of art—shaped contemporary discussions in aesthetics and philosophy of art.

Key concepts include beauty, taste, form, expression, representation and the experience of the sublime. The field distinguishes normative questions (what makes art good), descriptive questions (how we experience art) and evaluative questions (how to judge artworks). It also divides into philosophical aesthetics, empirical aesthetics (studying perceptual and cognitive processes) and applied aesthetics (design, architecture, urban planning, and everyday life).

In Finland, estetiikka is taught as part of philosophy and cultural studies, with academic inquiry focused on art theory, interpretation and the role of aesthetic experience in culture. Contemporary debates cover pluralism of taste, cultural difference, digital and AI-generated art, and environmental aesthetics.
