Esimäntä is a Finnish historical or dialectal term that refers to a person who manages a household or farm, typically as the female head of the household or mistress of the house. In modern Finnish, the more common word for this role is emäntä, while isäntä denotes the male head or host. Esimäntä can denote the person responsible for domestic affairs, provisioning, supervising staff and farmhands, and coordinating life on a farm or large household. In agrarian contexts, an esimäntä might be the farmer’s wife or a widow who runs the estate’s domestic economy.
